![]() Just over the town line is Westchester County in New York, where the Clintons have a comparatively modest but very secure house in Chappaqua, and where dozens more billionaires have large spreads with formal gardens, including George Soros and Michael Bloomberg, who seems to have homes in all the hot spots. Last year a shorefront property, Copper Beech Farm, sold for $120 million. Investment bankers, including several of the top 50 richest people in the country, have homes here, such as Ray Dalio, Thomas Peterffy, and Steve Cohen. Residents have included celebrities like Ron Howard, Mary Tyler Moore, Glenn Close, Regis Philbin, and Mel Gibson, whose house on Old Mill Road was on the market a few years ago for $39.5 million. With its proximity to New York, and its jutting peninsulas and leafy hills, Greenwich has become one of the most affluent towns in the country. Like the London borough after which it is named, the houses here tend towards the English estate style, with large lawns, classical statuary, and privacy. Greenwich is the closest Connecticut community to New York City, less than 40 minutes by train to Grand Central Station. Perhaps that is why it has been listed for more than two years, despite its 45-acre seafront lot. The scale and pedigree of these homes continues to support a robust real estate market, where one of the most expensive homes for sale is actually not a Gilded Age palace, but a house built in 2009, with an asking price of $45 million, and a relatively modest 7,698 square feet of space. Though some of the mansions of Newport have been turned into museums and schools, many remain in private hands, and are among the most conspicuous displays of large living in the nation. Entertainment celebrities, CEOs, and politicians, like John Kerry, have homes here too.Ī close second for the most expensive real estate market in New England is the adjacent island of Martha’s Vineyard. ![]() Tommy Hilfiger, whose fashion line evokes the affluent beach life of the island, built one of the most expensive homes on Nantucket. The coast of New England provides the historic context of colonial settlements and early industrialists’ ocean-front manors that evoke the estates of England, transposed and transformed in the New World. Mapping the places where the highest concentration of these homes appear, from the Hamptons to Malibu, presents a national realm of fantasy realty, where the American Dream is as vivid and obtainable as the horizon. With internet tools like Trulia and Zillow, homes currently on the market for $10 million or more can be found in abundance. According to the US Census Bureau, of the more than 115 million homes in the US, 8% are mobile homes, 17% are apartments, 10% are in 2-4 unit buildings, and 60% are single-family detached structures, what is generally understood to be a “house.” The value of the average American home, incidentally, is around $200,000.Īt the top end of the real estate market, the idea of home takes on spectacular dimensions, and spans the nation. This can occur for a variety of reasons, and ascertaining the root cause of dishonesty in a compulsive liar is critical in addressing the problem and beginning to rebuild relationships. As trust is a fundamental component of relationships, repeated violations of it indicate serious problems are afoot. Persistent dishonesty is a clear sign of something gone wrong in a friend or loved one. But what do you do when you realise the person you love lies pathologically? While the occasional white lie is considered to be a normal part of social interactions, repeated and elaborate fabrications cross into a very different territory. Perhaps because of nervous system signs, nervous system symptoms such as lameness, body paralysis, tremor, and torticollis were found ( Figures 1A,B). In young kids (under 3–4 months old), the most common symptoms were pneumonia and nervous system signs. Farmers reported that the goats were found dead mostly within 1 month or after a maximum of 3–4 months after clinical signs started. Two adults older than 1 year had mastitis, arthritis, and a rapid drop in milk production. As shown in Figures 1A,B, swelling of the carpal joints, stiffness, difficulty moving and standing, distortion of the leg, and cachexia were common in most goats suspected of being infected. Clinical signs were found in 11 adults older than 6 months and 10 young animals between 6 months and 1 year old. The farm was isolated from villages in mountain areas. With careful observation, we found that more than 60 adult goats showed similar clinical signs. In particular, one Saanen dairy goat farm in Korea reported that some goats showed clinical signs such as arthritis, paralysis, swelling of the carpal joints, and even death. We previously published only genetic sequence information of CAEV in Korea, and we report our findings of clinical and pathological results in this report.Īmong the 111 goats tested, 56 goats were positive by PCR. Although there have been many similar reports, as there are a very small number of dairy goats in Korea, CAE reports are very rare. The aim of our study was to investigate the clinical and pathological findings of caprine arthritis encephalitis (CAE) in dairy goats in Korea. Latent infection is common to most lentiviruses, similar to CAEV, for which the infection remains latent until monocytes mature into macrophages ( 1, 14). ![]() Sexual transmission is also another suspected route of transmission, and some sources speculate that in utero transmission occurs however, additional studies and confirmation are still required ( 7, 13). There is horizontal transmission by direct contact between goats through prolonged contact between infected and healthy animals housed in the same location ( 12). After ingestion in milk, the virus crosses the small intestine and infects monocytes and macrophages ( 1, 11). The major route of transmission is considered vertical transmission through colostrum or infected milk. Although it is a widespread disease in most goat-farming countries, little information is available on the CAEV infection status of Korean goats. The arthritic form is the most common and is generally observed in individuals aged 6 months and older ( 9, 10). ![]() After being first diagnosed in goats in 1974, it has been diagnosed worldwide ( 5– 8). Infection with CAEV is persistent and lifelong. There are four major clinical forms/presentations: arthritis, encephalitis, mastitis, and interstitial pneumonia ( 1– 4). Goats infected with CAEV exhibit severe and chronic devastating disease characterized by significant economic loss.
